Website & Domain Email: Munch is something different. The business made its name delivering artesanal burgers but was keen to get customers inside the restaurant to try its unique menu. The food pictures speak for themselves so the website deploys hero-image inspired visuals throughout. Text is kept concise and to-the-point. A responsive site, on desktop it displays an innovative menu solution inviting users to imagine they are already sitting down in the restaurant. Proprietor Joe asked me to set up domain email to keep all contact details on-brand. This was done using AWS’s cloud platform. Marking up Munch’s fantastic menu was hungry work!

Visual Identity & Website: KS Fitness’s visual identity is high-impact. Its logo was conceived to rely entirely on positive and negative space, allowing it to be ‘stamped’ onto almost any background. On the website, strong, primary colours and a super-bold, modern typeface complement action-shot imagery, and strong calls to action provide visitors with well-defined next steps. Meticulous CMS integration allows head trainer Kev Selley a high degree of control to constantly grow and evolve the site. Seamless addition of text, images and video lets Kev get on with what he does best - motivating, inspiring and informing those looking to get the best out of themselves.

Rayleigh Fruit n Veg

Visual Identity & Web App: Rayleigh Fruit n Veg was a much-loved shop at the top of Rayleigh High Street. A changing retail environment meant that this greengrocer needed to move online. A new visual identity was crafted around the public image that RFnV had been cultivating since 2006. A knockout logo, enabling the business to shine a spotlight on its top-quality produce is supported by custom SVG icons. A Ruby on Rails e-commerce app takes customer orders and aggregates shopping lists. This automation is crucial to a greengrocer who personally selects all produce at market just hours before it is delivered to customers. Meticulous social media integration has allowed RFnV to continue to build its community and reputation.

Website & Menu Printing: Tara Thai is a unique Thai restaurant in Westcliff-on-Sea. I was commissioned to refresh its website and design a brand new takeaway menu. This project was characterised by strong collaboration and regular face-to-face meetings. An in-depth wireframing phase was followed by the production of high-fidelity prototypes on Sketch. Working with a professional photographer, I directed the aesthetic for the project and used complementary Latin and Thai typography to reflect the restaurant’s cultural personality. Website content was optimised for search and Google’s webmaster tools were used to update the domain’s indexing status, resulting in very strong SERPS performance.

  • 10,000 takeaway menus printed

Complete Digital Support (Volunteer): Refugee Children’s Centres is a not-for-profit organisation set up in response to the European Refugee Crisis. It provides educational and play opportunities for children living in refugee camps. RCC benefits from a tremendous amount of volunteer help. My challenge was to provide tech support to help to tie different strands of the organisation together. After the initial project to update the RCC website and integrate it with a CMS, I have worked with the founder and the marketing manager to hone and standardise visual identity, analyse website use, synchronise social media and web content, and curate mailing lists.

Website: The Aviary is a successful salon providing a wide range of hair and beauty treatments to customers in Leigh-on-Sea. Director Laura needed a website to set her apart from the competition. Our starting point was well-defined, as Aviary customers typically fall into a handful of niche demographics. I designed a unique, UX-focussed, mobile-first site with animation powered by JavaScript. Because the design pushes the boundaries of CSS, extensive cross-browser testing was essential. Another unique feature of this website is it’s domain name. With a bespoke DNS setup, I was able to match the business name word-for-word: the.aviary.salon.

  • 100% match - business name to domain name
  • 63.96% sessions on mobile
  • 20 hair and beauty treatments

EXPERIENCE

Project
Adminstrator

Universities South West Logo

After leaving university, I worked as a project administrator for Universities South West, the higher education association for South West England. I learned about how university stakeholders interact on large scale projects and how budgets are allocated in big organisations. A meticulous and well-organised worker, I seized this opportunity to educate myself about best practice in project management.

Associate

As an associate in indirect taxes, I delivered high-quality solutions to a wide range of clients, from sole-ownership businesses to multinationals. In an energetic and constantly challenging environment, I gained experience of working in a highly-successful international organisation with diverse stakeholders, using systems and networks contributed to and shared by thousands of employees.

Travelling The World

This fantastic opportunity allowed me to challenge myself in completely new ways. Over 10 months, I learned a huge amount about a wide variety of cultures and constantly stepped outside of my comfort zone. During 3 months in Latin America, I learned to speak Spanish to a conversational level. I love meeting new people and feel that this amazing experience left me quickly able to establish a rapport with people from all kinds of backgrounds.

As a teacher in primary schools, I showed myself to be flexible, open-minded and positive. Communicative and energetic, I demonstrated team-working skills, as well as the ability to shoulder a very high level of responsibility myself. I’ve always been a great believer in lifelong learning and it was a privilege to play a part in laying the foundations for young students.

Freelance Developer
& Designer

Working for small and medium sized businesses, I build websites from the ground up.

This entails the following:

  • Meeting clients to identify requirements and goals
  • Drafting wireframes to establish basic site structure
  • Creating prototypes using image editing software (e.g. Sketch)
  • Coding in HTML, CSS (inc Sass) and JavaScript (inc jQuery)
  • Incorporating robust version control using Git
  • Leveraging Ruby to build sites efficiently
  • Integrating content management systems (e.g. DatoCMS)
  • Setting up forms
  • Connecting to external services (e.g. MailChimp) using APIs
  • Building Rails applications
  • Deploying static sites and web apps using Netlify and Heroku
  • Managing domains (and associated email) using Hover and Amazon Web services
  • Monitoring site usage with Google Analytics and site health with Google Webmaster Tools

The process is typically extremely dynamic and involves regular face-to-face meetings with clients and specification adjustments throughout.

Director
- Web Workshop

Web Workshop Logo

Web Workshop was set up by a small group of like-minded digital freelancers who realised that they could offer greater value to local businesses by pooling their resources. As well as static websites and web-apps, we are increasingly being asked to provide search engine optimisation and digital marketing services. We encourage businesses to move to a paperless marketing approach and support good causes where we can.

As the collective’s project lead, I am involved in everything we do, managing 90% of accounts. If there’s a digital solution I can’t provide myself, I know someone who can. I’m passionate about learning and, in this role, I acquire new skills on a daily basis. I love getting to know clients’ businesses and derive a great deal of satisfaction from working in this varied and challenging sector.
